Learning about our emotions
This term we have been focusing on the children's Personal, social and emotional development. The children have had missed experiences in the early years through lockdown and vital opportunities for developing these key skills may have been missed. We are having a heavy focus on recognising and understanding our own emotions, as well as those of others.
What can I do at home to support my child?
You can speak to your child about their own feelings, what this means and how they can manage them. You can use resources such as books, puppets or flash cards to describe why a character in a book may feel a certain way etc.
How can we support your child in nursery?
We have adapted our room provision to make space for a calm area to allow children who may need to regulate their emotions, to allow them the time and space to do this. This can be used as a reflection area and for staff to support the child to regulate if needed. There are a range of resources available in this area to support with their feelings.
What to do if I'm concerned about my child's emotions?
If you feel like your child is displaying extreme emotions that may be of a regular occurrence or of concern, you can speak to your child's keyworker, who will offer the necessary support and can refer to local services to help.
