Developing healthy Habits With Your Child

The new EYFS launched in September 2021 and it has a heavy focus on healthy eating and dental health for our early years children.

Here are some ways to develop healthy habits into your routine.

Registering with a dentist as soon as your baby cuts their first tooth

By registering your baby/child with a dentist as soon as possible, you are already making positive steps to healthy dental habits.  Your child will become familiar with your dentist and what happens in the dentist chair.  This will help alleviate any anxieties your child feels as they get older as it will already be part of their normal.

Use a toothpaste that is suitable
Children need to be using a toothpaste with a fluoride content of at least 1000ppm. Some of the baby toothpastes you can buy are too low and will not be helping to keep your child's teeth healthy.

 Stop using bottles with juice
This is one of the worst ways that will harm your child's teeth as it coats the back of the front teeth with liquid sugar, causing them to rot.  In some cases, new adult teeth will come through in the same way, meaning the child's teeth are permanently damaged.  At setting, we have removed all of our juice and only provide children with water and milk.

Provide more healthy snacks

At nursery, we only have healthy snacks at snack time, such as fruit, crackers or toast.  Children re encouraged to prepare their own snacks where possible and pour their own drinks, taking ownership of their own health.

Help your child to brush their teeth until they are around 8 years old

Now this may seem like a very long time to be brushing your child's teeth, but you are a support and a guide for when they start to do it on their own. They will know fully how to navigate their mouths, the routine in which to brush and targets all areas of the mouth, which the may not do if left to do on their own.

All of these tips are a really impactful way of instilling healthy habits into your child.  If you require any further assistance, please do reach out to us for advice :)

This term we have been focusing on the children's Personal, social and emotional development. The children have had missed experiences in the early years through lockdown and vital opportunities for developing these key skills may have been missed. We are having a heavy focus on recognising and understanding our own emotions, as well as those of others.
